Your first foot reflexology session: what to expect

If you have never had foot reflexology, you are probably wondering three things: does it hurt, how long does it take, and is there anything you need to do beforehand. One at a time.

Before we start

The session opens with a short assessment: what brings you, what complaints you are carrying, how you sleep, whether you are taking anything. You do not need to prepare anything or bring reports, though if you have them to hand they can add context.

You take off your shoes, and little else. The rest of the session is done clothed.

What the work is like

I explore the foot by touch before working it. I look for condensed areas with less elasticity that respond differently to pressure. On those I apply precise, sustained pressure, following the reflex map.

Pressure is adjusted to what your foot tolerates. Some points register more than others, and that is useful information: say so at the time and we adapt.

Does it hurt?

In very held areas, you do feel it. It is not sharp pain and it should not be: it is a dull sensation that usually eases as soon as the tissue starts letting go. You can ask for less intensity at any point.

Afterwards

  • Drink water through the rest of the day.
  • Warm or slightly heavy feet for a few hours is normal.
  • Many people sleep better that same night.
  • If an area feels tender the next day, it passes.

How often

It depends what you are after. For a specific complaint we usually start with sessions closer together and space them out as it responds. For upkeep, every three or four weeks is generally enough.

We work that out after the first session, based on what your foot showed, not from a package agreed in advance.
